JIYOUN HUR | BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Jiyoun Hur, a native of South Korea, is an award-winning flutist and orchestral musician residing in the Phoenix and Albuquerque areas. She is the First Prize Winner of the Alexander and Buono International Flute Competition and Second Prize Winner of the Hugo Kauder International Competition for Woodwinds. Her most recent achievements include winning the National Flute Association Newly Published Music Competition and being invited to perform at the National Flute Convention in Minnesota.
As an orchestral musician, Dr. Hur has held the Associate Principal Flute position with the New Mexico Philharmonic since 2013. She has also performed in the Phoenix Symphony, Opera Southwest, Figueroa Project, Indiana Festival Orchestra, Buchoen Philharmonic, Korean Symphony Orchestra, Prime Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Baroque Chamber Orchestra. Throughout her orchestral career, she has worked with world-renowned conductors and musicians, including Roberto Minczuk, Franz Welser-Möst, Olga Kern, Robert Spano, and Leonard Slatkin. Dr. Hur has been an emerging artist in various solo performances from an early age. She first made her debut as a performer when she was 12 years old in Korea. In this debut performance, she played Devienne’s Flute Concerto No. 7 with brilliant technique. In addition, she was invited to perform as a soloist with the Seoul Art Orchestra at the young age of 13. After graduating from Sun-Hwa Arts Middle School and High School, she continued to devote herself to music. She won numerous competitions during this time, including the Korean Flute Association Competition, Sung-Shin Women’s University Flute Competition, the University of Seoul’s Woodwind Competition, the Korean Philharmonic Orchestra Competition, and the Korean Music Competition. While studying at Seoul National University, she won prominent music competitions in Korea, such as winning First Place in the Sung Jung Music Competition, the Woo-Hyun Music Competition, and the Joong-Ang Newspaper Music Competition; winning Third Place in the Dong-A Music Competition and the Korean Music Association Competition; and placing as a Finalist in the Osaka International Flute Competition. In addition, she represented Seoul National University as the Principal Flutist as a Senior in the Seoul Meets Manheim Orchestra, which performed in Carnegie Hall, Yale University, and four cities in Germany. Dr. Hur has won numerous competitions since she began studying in the United States. She won First Place in the Mid-South Young Artist Flute Competition and the Indiana University Woodwind Concerto Competition, and Second Place in both the Frank Bowen Flute Competition and the Southern Illinois Instrumental Competition. As an active soloist, she has been performing regularly in both the U.S and Korea. Her first solo recital in Korea was sponsored by the Kum-Ho Asiana Company in 2003. Since 2007, she has been featured in various concerts, such as Mid-South Flute Festival’s Closing Gala Concert, the Winner’s Concert at Fire House in New Haven, and the Alexander and Buono International Flute Competition Winner’s Concert at Carnegie Hall. As an orchestral musician, she had the honor of performing as a soloist with the Sung Jung Philharmonic Orchestra. Dr. Hur has also performed as a soloist with the New Mexico Philharmonic Orchestra, the Korean Symphony Orchestra, and the Indiana University Orchestra. In 2016, she was invited to hold a solo recital at the Tunghai University in Taiwan. Additionally, she gave six recitals at Indiana University and three recitals at Arizona State University with varied and diverse repertoire for her music degrees. Dr. Hur has also given recitals in Korea in 2011 and 2015. Not only did she perform in solo and orchestra performances, but she also performed as a chamber musician. She performed as a member of the Adina Flute Choir and Claret Ensemble in Korea. She has also performed duo concerts with piano in various venues, such as the Park Changsoo House Concert, Moon-Kyoung Arts Center, and Paju Camerata in Korea. Dr. Hur earned her Bachelor of Music degree from Seoul National University in Korea in 2006. After she came to the US, she earned both an Artist Diploma and a Master of Music Degree in Music Performance from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Most recently, she earned her Doctoral of Musical Arts degree from Arizona State University with her published research paper, “Warm-Ups for Flute.” As an educator, Dr. Hur has taught students as an Associate Instructor at Indiana University and as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Arizona State University. She has been invited to hold masterclasses at several universities, including Tunghai University, University of New Mexico, and Glendale Community College. As an experienced teacher, she has been teaching private flute lessons for 15 years. Dr. Hur’s principal teachers include Elizabeth Buck, Kathryn Lukas, Thomas Robertello, Hyeri Yoon, and Rock-Sun Moon.
